Everything you need to know about using Altagonist.

Getting Started

Installation

  1. Download the Altagonist plugin from your account page
  2. In WordPress, go to Plugins > Add New > Upload Plugin
  3. Upload the zip file and click Install Now
  4. Activate the plugin

Activating Your License

After activation, go to Altagonist > Settings in your WordPress admin.

  • Free plan: Leave the license key field empty and click Validate. You'll automatically receive 15 free credits per month.
  • Paid plan: Paste your license key from your account page and click Validate. Your credits and plan will be confirmed.

Choosing Your Languages

On the Settings page, check the languages you want to use for alt tag generation. Only checked languages will appear in the language selector on the main page.

Altagonist supports 20 languages: English, Dutch, Spanish, French, German, Italian, Portuguese, Russian, Japanese, Chinese, Korean, Arabic, Hindi, Turkish, Polish, Swedish, Danish, Norwegian, Finnish, and Czech.

Generating Alt Tags

Single Image

Go to Altagonist in your WordPress admin. You'll see all images in your media library.

  1. Select a language and quality level
  2. Click the play button next to any image
  3. The alt tag will be generated and saved automatically
  4. A checkmark appears when complete

To regenerate, hover over the checkmark and click the redo icon.

Batch Processing

To process multiple images at once:

  1. Check the boxes next to the images you want to process (or use the select-all checkbox)
  2. Click the blue play button in the header
  3. Images are processed one by one — each shows a spinner while processing
  4. Credits are deducted per image based on quality level

Filtering Images

Use the Show Only Empty toggle to filter your media library to only show images that don't have an alt tag yet. This is useful for finding images that still need processing.

Auto-Generate on Upload

Enable this in Settings to automatically generate alt tags whenever you upload new images to WordPress.

You can configure the default language and quality level for auto-generated tags. This runs silently in the background and won't interrupt your upload.

Quality Tiers

Lite (1 credit)

Uses image metadata only: filename, title, caption, description, and dimensions.

Best for: Standalone images, product photos, or images where the filename is descriptive. Fastest processing time.

Medium (2 credits)

Everything in Lite, plus excerpts from your homepage and the page/post where the image is used (up to 500 characters each).

Best for: Most use cases. Provides a good balance between context and cost. The AI understands what your page is about and generates more relevant descriptions.

High (3 credits)

Everything in Medium, but sends the full content of your homepage and the page/post — no character limits.

Best for: Content-heavy pages where context matters most. Produces the most relevant and specific alt tags. Slowest processing time.

  4. All generated alt tags will be in the selected language

Troubleshooting

Insufficient credits

If you see this error, you don't have enough credits for the selected quality tier. You can:

  • Switch to a lower quality tier (e.g. Lite instead of Medium)
  • Wait for your monthly credit renewal
  • Upgrade to a higher plan

Image could not be read

This usually means the image format is unsupported or the file is corrupted. Altagonist supports JPEG, PNG, and WebP images up to 20MB. Try re-uploading the image or converting it to a supported format.

Server not available

If the server is temporarily unreachable, wait a moment and try again. If the issue persists, check our status page or contact support.

Alt tag seems inaccurate

Try the following:

  • Use Medium or High quality for more context-aware results
  • Make sure your image filename is descriptive (e.g. red-nike-sneaker.jpg instead of IMG_4521.jpg)
  • Regenerate by hovering over the checkmark and clicking the redo icon
  • You can always manually edit alt tags in the WordPress media library

Plugin not showing in admin menu

Altagonist requires the upload_files capability. This is available to Editors and Administrators by default. If you have a custom role, make sure it includes this capability.

FAQ

Are my images stored on your servers?

No. Images are processed in real-time and immediately discarded after generating the alt text. We do not store your images.

Can I use Altagonist on multiple sites?

Free plans are limited to one site. Paid plans can be used on multiple sites — just enter the same license key in each WordPress installation. Credits are shared across all sites.

Will this slow down my site?

No. Alt tags are generated in the WordPress admin only, not on the front-end. The plugin adds no code or scripts to your public pages.

Can I cancel my subscription?

Yes, you can cancel at any time from your account page. You'll keep access until the end of your billing period.
